Overview

Lays out, machines, fits, assembles, and finishes metal tool steels and parts to make and repair and troubleshoot stamping dies by performing the following duties.

Responsibilities

  • Studies blueprints of die and product die models, templates, and prototype parts and visualize shape, mechanical structure, and operation of die.
  • Develops and maintains progressive and transfer stamping dies.
  • Computes dimensions, plans machining, layout, and assembly operations.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining by other workers.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathe, milling machine, radial drill press, shaper, and grinder, to machine parts to specifications, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications.
  • Lifts machined parts and positions them for assembly on worktable or surface plate.
  • Smoothes flat and contoured surfaces and fits parts to each other.
  • Verifies dimensions, clearances, and alignment of members and parts in die.
  • Dowels and bolts parts together.
  • Works to tolerances as close as 0.0005 inch.
  • Fits and assembles cam operated mechanisms for lateral movement of part of die.
  • Responsible for die maintenance and repair, tool changes, inventory, quality, documentation and communication.
  • New product development and launches, along with continuous process improvement.
  • Dismantles die and repairs or replaces parts.

Qualifications

  • Tool and die makers will possess a certificate and have completed a U.S. Department of Labor recognized apprenticeship, or have at least 8 years proven experience in the tool and die trade.
  • They must be capable of understanding math-based measurement systems and demonstrate the ability to fully understand complex written material and to write materials describing their work equipment and processes.
  • Knowledge of S.P.C., computer skills and experience in progressive tooling and transfer dies are a plus.
